Cresswell Residency

Joint artist in residence for 12 months at Cresswell Pele Tower and Garden in Northumberland. Research was conducted through talking to and making work with visitors and volunteers, and many trips to Northumberland Archives. This resulted in a body of work based on the passage of time, colour and shapes, and Cresswell's historical connections to signalling and coding through the use of maritime signal flags and the Enigma machine. I made 12 drawings over the 12 months which referenced the colours I remembered from visits each month and this progressed into a painted visual geometric code which is to be used in a future project with the Pele Tower and Garden. This proposal is currently under review and would see a large scale textile work made using the visual code, as a 'quilt' which would cover the entire tower, referencing the garden and tower as a place of sanctuary.
